Case Study: Raising Grassroots Nonprofit’s National Profile & Millions in Donations
The Ask
In 2022, Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine caused a humanitarian disaster. Common Man for Ukraine, a grassroots nonprofit bringing food and relief supplies to Ukraine’s children of war, turned to Henrich Communications to shape and share their story, developing the organization’s brand identity, messaging, communications infrastructure, and public presence.
Startup nonprofits face a variety of challenges as public interest in their cause wanes, economic conditions change, reliable funding sources vary, and media relations and social media become increasingly complex yet vital tools for fundraising. Henrich Communications sought to build a foundation of public, media, and third-party validation that Common Man for Ukraine could leverage to maintain and grow its fundraising and humanitarian work.
The Strategy
The Henrich Communications team developed a multi-faceted earned and owned media approach for the nonprofit Common Man for Ukraine, which included directing media relations, thought leadership development, social media strategy and execution, establishing and writing a weekly newsletter, and conducting media training for the organization’s co-founders.
By first building consistent messaging and securing a regional media coverage footprint, HC helped Common Man for Ukraine establish itself as a viable resource for national and international news outlets. HC then partnered with Common Man for Ukraine’s co-founders to develop and establish their influential thought leadership voice that guides the national conversation on delivering humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged country of Ukraine. HC also teamed with the client to facilitate positive experiences with journalists, ensuring Common Man for Ukraine’s subject expertise would be seen as accessible and welcome again and again on their platforms.
The Result
Since the ongoing partnership launched in 2022, the Henrich Communications team has secured more than 2,000 media mentions for Common Man for Ukraine, reaching an estimated audience of more than 800 million people. This publicity has contributed to fundraising totals topping $4 million and increasing the nonprofit’s donor base to more than 4,000 individuals, foundations, and corporate supporters.
Notably, Henrich Communications has earned Common Man for Ukraine consistent national and regional media coverage, including a cover story in USA Today, a feature from Ukraine on the CBS Evening News, multiple op-eds published in Newsweek, as well as widespread and consistent New England TV, newspaper, radio, and digital media coverage. Henrich Communications also helped secure Common Man for Ukraine’s entrance into the Clinton Global Initiative’s Ukraine Action Network.
And the work continues.
