September: Your Business’ Second New Year?

Fall is upon us and schedules are becoming, once again, more routine.

For most, summertime meant some combination of vacations away, visiting guests, long weekends and “Summer Fridays.” Fall’s return to routine means a return to more consistency in our lives, including our professional ones.

Whatever industry we are in, our colleagues and clients are also re-engaged in a more reliable way. This is an opportune time to rethink and fine-tune our communications strategy both internally and externally.

I like to think of September as a quasi-second new year — the refresh and reset of summer has people reinvigorated. Now’s the time to take advantage of that energy.

As Q4 approaches in the not-so-distant future for organizations operating on a calendar year, look at what has been working with your communication and messaging — and just as importantly, if not more so — what has not been. While still giving your messaging time to make an impression, reviewing results on a regular basis and making slight tweaks to your strategy can improve impact.

Additionally, if your company has a public relations strategy that includes outreach to journalists, the start of fall is a perfect time to look at your media lists. With the return to normal schedules, it’s time to check for accuracy with your targeted outlets and journalists. Have they switched positions? Outlets? Beats? Are there new reporters in your interest areas? Let’s prioritize our media list refresh!

By taking time now to strategically evaluate our communications plan, you can set yourself up for a strong Q4 that’s around the corner.
